365 DAYS IN A NIGHTMARE: THE VIETNAM WAR STORY
It would’ve been good if the things occurring in the battlefields of Vietnam didn’t scar us so deeply. If time existed to think — think about our choices, about the right way to live through a year-long nightmare. But it became an impossible wish. The weight of our decisions would lead us to the same place — a path offering injury, life, or death. Either way, the war came for us.
For those who returned, no one understood the sickness that followed. We couldn’t see it. But it was there — silent and poisonous. We couldn’t see the illnesses of PTSD and Agent Orange, couldn’t see the invisible damage they did. We tried to fit in. We wanted to. But the world had no sympathy for us. No understanding.
“We did our duty,” we said. “We did what we were told,” we cried.
And that was what it meant. That was the weight we carried as veterans of Vietnam. We needed to fight a different war for what was good in America. But it was hard. So damn hard. Not all of us made it.
