ANOTHER DAY IN VIETNAM AND SURVIVAL IN THE JUNGLE
Combat in the jungles of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia wasn’t easy. Fatigue and injury came without effort. Death was always waiting, but you never knew when it would find you.
The insects, the microbes, the leeches — they were monsters. They fed on your blood your flesh, and every bite became an infection under the punishing heat. The wounds didn’t heal out here. They festered.
Broken fingers? Common. We taped them up and kept going. No one asked to leave the team. Even when things got bad, we stayed in the fight. There was no other choice. The faster we finished the mission, the sooner we could get back to base, away from the hell.
So, we hacked through the jungle, rain pouring down, mud sucking at our boots, the sweat mingling with the dirt. The air was thick with death, and we knew it.
Back home, people had no idea. Breakfast at the table, hot coffee in hand, kids scrambling for their lunch bags, their lives untouched. The President’s dog ate, and the secretary read the day’s schedule. They had no clue about the hell we were living.
We were alone out there, too far for help. It was just us — our skills, our endurance. The fatigue soaked deep, filling our bones. Thirst gnawed at us, but no amount of water could quench it. The air felt like fire, thick and choking, already a hundred degrees at dawn. The weight of our packs crushed us. Breathing was a struggle, but we kept moving.
And that was another day in Vietnam.
