ANOTHER PIECE OF VIETNAM WE CARRIED HOME
Fitting in remained a significant challenge.
Insights into Vietnam Uncensored
After Vietnam, my buddies and I did not readily make friends. The problem centered around trust issues. We remained skeptical of all new acquaintances.
PTSD had something to do with it, and the short fuses setting us off in anger went misunderstood to civilians. You can say our combat experience in the service of America provided a sense of entitlement. After all, we laid down our bodies and lives to serve at our country’s request.
If anyone thought we did not deserve respect, then the consequence could end in violence. Harnessing this anger became one of the most significant challenges.
When you stood beside the courageous, ready to sacrifice for you, a feeling of finding another did not seem possible. It is the reason many brothers signed up for another tour, joined police departments, or struck out on their own. Others could not find the means to rise from the cesspool of the war to function in a society that appeared to have little use for them.
