DUTY AND DISILLUSIONMENT: THE TRUTH OF VIETNAM
We were individuals marked by doubt, ordinary people pulled from our lives and thrust into the military by the government. The fate awaiting us in Vietnam was beyond comprehension, a reality so foreign it was impossible to grasp in its fullness. Yet, despite the fear, the confusion, and the uncertainty, we embraced our duty to America, honoring our oaths to each other and to the country we served.
We signed over our lives to the Army, following orders without hesitation, oblivious to the unfolding consequences. In doing so, we came to embody the very definition of heroism in the annals of American history.
But our service, our sacrifice, came at an unfathomable cost. Over 58,000 of my brothers perished, 150,000 were wounded, and tens of thousands bore the scars of war — PTSD, Agent Orange, Burn Pits, and diseases we never saw coming. And through it all, not a single member of the government who misled the American people or perpetuated this pointless, endless war was ever held accountable.
