Hi, Laurel. I liked your story about insight into the lives of the Amish. From my experience fundamentalist religions usually abuse the public system of taxes, public service, education, and the like. They horde under the guise of freedom of religion, and hold women as chattel, and disdain from contributing to the public good. In the draft of the Vietnam war, while inner city boys were inducted, the men of religious groups were exempt. In the fear of public reprisals, our government did not pursue. The practices of limiting education, especially for women, marrying women as young as twelve and thirteen have been outlawed, but still practiced. It is difficult to monitor the closed systems of fundamentalist religions based on freedoms guaranteed under the constitution, and therefore a great deal of abuse occurs without correction. Nevertheless, I found your article interesting and well written. Thanks.
