HOLLYWOOD WASN’T WATCHING: MY UNCENSORED VIETNAM WAR

Hollywood never stops surprising me. Every scene, every line, every character seems just right. The dialogue’s sharp. The hero always knows what to do. But in the real war, the one in Vietnam, none of it made sense. The North Vietnamese weren’t where they should’ve been. They popped up everywhere but the North. They hit hard, and they hit true. The maps were wrong, the artillery missed, and the Air Force couldn’t hit a thing but the dirt. I figured every time I bent the rules, prison awaited me. And still, we got the job done — barely, at times. I don’t know how. The odds were against us. Every plan I made went to hell. I might as well have flipped a coin, but that would’ve been too easy.

My CO nailed it when he said, “Ranger, you never cease to amaze. But your success is the perfect example of how incompetence can rise to the top in the Army.” Hell, he was right. Maybe being too smart ain’t always the answer. In the Army, that is. But what do I know?
