How did we survive on the battlefields of Vietnam?

I think of the time I spent with my comrades on the killing fields of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia all the time.

I remember the overwhelming anxiety and fear that shadowed our every move. We did not know if we would survive the day, but we took our daily oaths to one another and then a deep breath before we plunged into the unknown.

Then, one day, I looked up at the clear, radiant morning twilight and realized only one great thing existed. It was to live to see each new day and the light that filled the world and appreciate the life it was mine to live.

I had forgotten.
