I found your essay about a trip to Rafah poignant and illuminating. News reports about the conflict are accusatory and side-taking. Your experience reveals the lives of people trying to live a decent life. It is the first time I read an article about Gaza where I did not find myself angry over the consistent and persistent violence. I attempt to remain neutral without placing blame, but the endemic hatred of one side toward another is disturbing. One news voice blames one side, another news voice takes the opposite position, and I can only think how very terrible it is for both protagonists to carry such hurt and loss without trauma ruling a rational solution. And while I feel each side has a case, it is the innocent who suffer the affects of those responsible for using violence to support their positions. And then I think, if only everyone would mind their own business and let life continue without such animosity and accusation - but it is but a hollow thought. Still, I understand war and the terrible outcome. I like your story, and hope the Rafah you describe can permanently become the wonderful community you described so well. Thanks for posting this story. Best regards.
