SURVIVING VIETNAM: A JOURNEY THROUGH DARKNESS, TRANSFORMATION AND REGRET
The thought crossed my mind: Was our small team really making a difference in the war? Yet, all we did was shuffle through tasks feeling as irrelevant as the larger storm of the Vietnam War surrounding us.
Still, I believed our presence mattered. To what end, I couldn’t say. Then, I wondered if I was lying to myself. Could we change a country that had known a thousand years of war and foreign occupation?
Our only victory was to stand together, finish our missions, and survive. And that’s what we did time and again. But our former identities and values slipped away from us like smoke from a dying campfire.
We drank the elixir of the war, and killing became part of what kept us breathing. No act was too vile, no evil too great. We survived. But we couldn’t save everyone. Over 58,000 of us fell on those blood-drenched fields. That’s the truth. Who’s to blame?
We did our best, but I mourn my brothers who never returned. I grieve and think of them still.
