Member-only story
Time stops in a war zone.
The days run into one another as so much wet newspaper.
We forgot if it was Monday or Sunday, 5 a.m. or 10 p.m. And it was always on to the next thing, where something more horrific would appear.
We went through the motions of our duty and training. Our brothers depended on us for survival. And while we may have forgotten the nights we spent covered in mud and slime, we did not forget what we needed to accomplish.
I remember returning to base after Christmas to find the remnants of holiday dinner, our reward.
We were rocks — implacable walls without sentiment or emotion. But at the sight of the unit’s funky Christmas card, we melted into the boys we once were.
We immediately envisioned mom and dad, those we loved and friends. The aromas of favorite foods wafted in our minds, and the good feeling of being in the company of loved ones slid over us like warm oil.
Of course, it was but for an instant. Still, many would never live to see home again. Yet, I always think of that moment and my brothers who did not return when Christmas comes around.
Your enthusiasm and inspiration has meant the world to me, and I can’t wait for you to dive into the pages of Vietnam Uncensored when it’s released in the New Year.
I hope this holiday season brings you joy, love, and laughter with your loved ones. And I’m excited to share with you all the new developments along this journey.
Once again, I thank you for your support.
