He was a trained Special Forces Marine driven senseless by a traumatic combat experience, making him unfit for battle. Yet, the Army kept him in Vietnam. He held a minor clerical position inside the basement of a warehouse storing hundreds of thousands of documents. They were copies of all the General Orders keeping the Army’s northern Vietnam administration.
Thousands of papers slid down the cute for sorting to the weakly lit dungeon of file cabinets and loosely bound stacks rising to the ceiling. It flowed into the netherworld occupied by the Master of Files, Cpl. Winnicki. It was an absolute fact that Winnick did nothing to organize. Yet the paper kept falling, so it became hopeless to walk from one end of the building to another past the jungle of documents impeding the way.
Of course, it was impossible to understand the Army’s logic in giving the job of filing thousands upon thousands of documents in a dimly lit forest of paper to a crazy person. Still, there was no sense in attributing malice to the stupidity I encountered in the Army. So, as part of my recovery from an injured shoulder, I became charged with this dungeon of papers…
