Was courage enough on the battlefield?

I have heard many call veterans who served on the battlefields of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia heroes. But they do not understand.

We were average boys caught in the draft and sent to Vietnam.

What distinguished us was not just our courage but a strange reserve we called up after complete exhaustion.

That reservoir of raw emotion came when all hope of survival was gone, and we faced the beast of oblivion.

Stand with me, if you will, at the side of that nineteen-year-old young man and know he would give his life to save you.

Sleep at his side in the mud and rain, share the measly rations, and suffer the injuries, diseases, and loneliness we felt on an endless battlefield filled with the enemy.

And yet, for all our misery, we would not leave our brothers.
