Member-only story
What quality propels us forward in the face of adversity?
I remember our overwhelming anxiety on the battlefield.
It was not so much the absence of fear but conquering its manifestation instead.
We never considered ourselves brave.
We had a job, and we got on with it.
Once the enemy was in range, it was not so much to kill them but to ensure they did us no harm as we fulfilled our orders.
Of all the things I wished before battle, it was that we all returned safely. I only wish it were so.
