What we could not see
What other reason than sheer stupidity were we doing on the killing fields of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia?
The Army paid a paltry wage, offered terrible sleeping quarters and lousy food, and had us suffering from thirst, exhaustion, high anxiety, combat, injury, and death.
Perhaps it was a love of country? Maybe we believed that fighting the communists was a just cause. But our government had ordered us into battle, and we found ourselves in the Devil’s playground.
Yet, we would gladly follow the enemy into the depths of hell to protect our brothers. It was the only cause that mattered — survival at all costs and never leaving a comrade behind. And that was the way it was for us.
