When safety no longer mattered and conscience dominated
He was injured, alone, and covered in mud.
Insects had entered his wound when we came upon him.
His eyes, caked with dirt, opened slowly, and his voice was only a whisper.
“I knew you’d come for me” were the only words he spoke before we hauled him onto our shoulders and carried him to the waiting Dust Off. Then we returned to our mission.
We chose to do this because our brother’s life came before ours. It was what we decided to do with the life given to us to lead while in Vietnam.
