Member-only story
When unpredictability brought anxiety, injury, and death
There was no sense in thinking of what would happen on the next mission. It was crazy to extrapolate the future, even twenty-four hours later.
Nothing went as planned, and the enemy was invisible and elusive. We quelled our anxiety, planned what we could, and stepped into the theater that was the Vietnam war.
Were we successful? Ideally, we managed to complete our assignments and return uninjured. I’m sorry to say it was not the case. Unfortunately, more than 58,000 of my brothers and sisters perished in that war, and 150,000 returned wounded.
