WHO OWNED THE FUTURE? — A VIETNAM TRUTH

The future wasn’t ours.
It belonged to those we left behind.
To the kids still in school, untouched by the draft.
To the politicians whose children stayed safe.
To the ones whose parents bought them out of the war.
To the ones who ran to Canada, away from duty.
To the religious groups who were exempt from the fight.
It didn’t belong to us, who had no direction after high school.
It didn’t belong to the ones trapped in the ghettos.
To the kids who quit school to feed their families.
To the street kids, the dreamers who had nowhere to go.
And it didn’t belong to us — the ones the politicians used and threw away.
We did our duty.
We served.
We suffered.
And we followed the path they promised was a just cause and would lead to something greater than ourselves

But the cause was false, and the road only led us to injury, illness, and death.

We were betrayed, first by our government and then by the civilian population upon our return.
