I decided that everything was what we believed.

We were not miserable unless we thought so. We were not fearful unless we allowed ourselves to become overwhelmed.

I had met men who talked about dying rather than experiencing the pain and misery of injury. But the team did not think this way.

Occasionally, when we huddled in the night against the cold and rain in the mountains, we would pass a bottle of Jack D and a joint and discuss plans. But nothing we ever said followed us home to become a reality.

Instead, we returned to face different challenges. The invisible criminal of PTSD. An uncaring public and our inability to fit in.
